General Information

 

Supplies/Organization

1.  Student Planner:  Students are required to record homework daily.  “No homework” should also be indicated.  If there is nothing written in the planner for English and Social Studies, there is a problem.  Check my website.  Hopefully, it will be up and running soon. J 

          2.  3 Pocket folders: (Mead, PeeChee) Folders will be cleaned in class after each unit of study, and work     should be taken home and stored in a safe place.  Do not throw away any assignments during the school         year.  There should be no loose papers in the student’s backpack.

·        Parent Communication folder:  Wednesday Packet, notes from teacher, tests requiring parent signature

·        English folder:  English assignments and reference sheets only

·        Social Studies:  Social Studies assignments only

          3.  70 page spiral writing Notebook:  Graded at the end of each trimester, this is an important part of the        writing grade.  Used throughout the year during the study of each core novel, the required rules are listed        inside the front cover.

          4.  Daily Oral Language Composition Book:  These are used throughout the year to practice spelling     dictation, punctuation, and grammar.

5.  Free Choice Reading Book:  Students are required to have a book with them at all times.  Minimum reading requirement is one book per six weeks.  All pages read should be recorded on the reading log, worth 10 points, which doubles as a bookmark.  A book report will be assigned and due at the end of each six-week        period, worth 50 points.

          6.  Miscellaneous Supplies:  Please replenish these throughout the year.  Lined paper (81/2” x 11” only),        black and colored ballpoint pens, pencils with erasers, Papermate (Flare) felt markers, glue sticks

7.  Backpack:  These take up less space than a book bag in our crowded classroom, because they can be hung          on the back of the desk chair.  Large “Trapper Keepers” and 3-ring binders are cumbersome and do not fit on the desk. 

 

Grading

          1.  English:  Weighted Grade

·        Writing 30% - Paragraph development, response to literature, essays, and vocabulary study

·        Reading Comprehension 30% - Quizzes on core literature, short stories, and SRA

·        Spelling/Grammar 20% - Spelling tests are given on Fridays of most 5-day weeks.  Grammar quizzes are based on the practice handouts in the weekly spelling packet, and given at the end of each grammar unit. 

·        Classwork/Homework 20% - Spelling/Grammar packets are given on Monday and due on Friday, worth 20 points.   Classwork consists of assignments not included in the categories above.  Homework is mostly unfinished classwork.

          2.  Social Studies:  Unweighted Grade

·        Unit Tests – 100 points:  Study guides are given one week in advance.   

·        Quizzes – 20-50 points

·        Classwork/Homework – 10 -50 points 

     Daily homework is discussed in class on the day it is due.  If students are not prepared to discuss the homework, they will earn a zero on the assignment.

3.  Citizenship/Work habits:  O – Outstanding, S – Satisfactory, N – Needs Improvement, U – Unsatisfactory

4.  A Six-week Progress Report will be sent each trimester to students earning a grade of C- or below, or an N or U.

          5.  The Progress Report will indicate the areas that need improvement.

 

Homework

          1.  Approximately 60 minutes nightly (20 minutes per class)

          2.  Late work is graded down and not accepted after 5 days. 

3.  Weekly Spelling Packets worth 20 points and daily Social Studies homework worth 10 points are not accepted late.

          4.  There are no “extra credit” assignments and no “make-up” tests.  Students are expected to complete      work when it is assigned.

          5.  An asterisk next to a listed homework assignment pertains to RSP students who have split English.

          6.  When problems occur, students must see the teacher before an assignment is due.

 

Absences

          1.  Students are responsible for completing all assignments.

          2.  If a student is absent, it is his or her responsibility to call a study buddy or check the website and get the          necessary assignments.

          3.  After 2 days of absence, it is advisable to call the office, and the staff will gather homework assignments    from all teachers, which can be picked up in the office after school.

          4.  A one-day assignment is due the day after a student returns from an absence.  Tests will be taken the day     after an absence.   

          5.  Long-term assignments are always due on the due date, and will be graded down for every day they         are late.

          6.  Students who will be absent 5 days or more will need an Independent Study Packet.  (See Student        Handbook)

 

 

Discipline

          1.  Students are expected to enter the classroom quietly, be in their seats at the tardy bell, read the agenda   board, and be ready to work.  Detention will be assigned after three tardies.

          2.  Students should remain on task throughout the day and transition between lessons without delay or       distractions.

          3.  Students should raise a hand to speak during directed lessons, rather than calling out, and should be     respectful to others at all times.

          4.  Incentives:  Praise, raffle tickets, line passes, lottery tickets, free time, good citizenship grade

          5.  Consequences:  Informal verbal warning, formal verbal warning, time out, student-teacher conference at         break, detention, referral to advisor, call or note home, lower grade in citizenship and/or work habits

 

Curriculum

          1.  All California Standards for Grade Six English-Language Arts and Social Studies will be addressed and       assessed.

          2.  English 

·        Goal:  to inspire life-long readers and develop critical thinking skills

·        Anthology:  The Language of Literature

·        Core Literature:  The Cay, Tuck Everlasting, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, Bridge to Terabithia

·        Additional Reading:  Nothing But the truth, The Greek Gods, Free choice books, SRA, poetry

          3.  Social Studies

·        Goal:  to develop literate citizens; individuals with knowledge

·        Thematic Units:  Maps/World Geography, Early Cultures/Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Ancient India and China, Ancient Greece and Rome

·        Skills: research, note-taking, outlining, test-taking strategies, mapping/charting, oral participation

·        Materials:  Textbook – Ancient Civilizations, power point presentations, videos, current events, games, artwork

 

Parent Communication/Participation

          1.  Questions/Concerns:  Please notify me first if you have a concern.  Send a note, email, or voice mail.

          2.  Things to do at home: 

·        Regularly check your child’s planner and my website.  Help him/her to budget time and meet due dates.

·        Ask to see your child’s assignments.  Help with quality, clarifying ideas, editing, and neatness.

·        Read with your child and discuss what he or she is learning.

·        Provide a quiet, organized place to study.

·        Help clean and organize the backpack on a regular basis.

·        Be sure your child has the necessary supplies throughout the year.
