Here in MBUSD, we have ten 18-22 year-old young adult special education students who stay with MBUSD as they transition from school to the working world. The CHOICE program, with key partners like the City of MB, Downtown MB Businesses, The Zislis Group. LA Car Guy, and Smashing Success (our CHOICE students prepare the race kits (pictured) for the awesome and world-famous Pumpkin Race!), provides real-world work experience, vocational training, and life skills for our amazing students. We thank all who help to make this program such a great success!
I have had the opportunity to watch our students in action. They are a key part of the staff at the Shade Hotel. I watched them taking direction from staff, and truly being treated as members of the Shade team I have observed them assembling the race kits for the pumpkin races. I have observed our students working in our food services department preparing meals. All of these opportunities provide our students with training and give the true participation in the working world.
My thanks go to MBUSD teacher Lareina Rodriguez and MBUSD behaviorist Sonia Dickson, who designed and implemented the CHOICE program, and who are among the many MBUSD professionals who care for our students so deeply.
We appreciate all of our partners in the CHOICE program, and we are looking for more partners. You can learn more about the CHOICE program by liking their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=mbusdchoice). There is also a wonderful article in The Beach Reporter on the program.
