Drama Course List

The District’s award-winning Drama and Technical Theater programs provide overarching curriculum that fosters creativity, collaboration, and technical skill.

Drama courses engage students in acting, directing, and playwriting while also exploring theater history and criticism. Technical Theater courses offer hands-on experience in all aspects of production support, including lighting, sound, set design, and stage management.

The Drama and Technical Theater programs produce professional-quality theatrical productions, supports student-run clubs, and at the high school level, features a ComedySportz improv team that showcases student talent and quick-thinking performance skills.

Program alumni have gone on to achieve success in acting, writing, and production, earning recognition on Broadway, in Hollywood, and in regional theaters across the country.

Thanks to Proposition 28 funding, the district has expanded its Drama program to the elementary level, providing TK and Kindergarten students with access to a full-time Musical Theater teacher.

Elementary students also participate in a variety of co-curricular and extracurricular performance opportunities within their classrooms and school communities, many made possible through generous support from site PTA/PTSA organizations.

The award-winning MBMS Drama program introduces students to the foundational skills needed for success in theater, including acting, collaboration, and stage presence. The program also emphasizes the development of empathy, self-acceptance, compassion, and critical thinking; skills that foster personal growth and strengthen students’ ability to connect with others.

Graduates of the MBMS Drama program go on to excel in high school theater productions as well as productions outside of school. They are also able to succeed in other non-theater classes where public speaking, critical thinking, and confidence are required.

High school drama and tech students participate throughout the year in a wide range of productions, including two major theatrical productions, two student-run benefit performances, and the senior thesis production, “Senior Scenes.” Students may also audition for ComedySportz HSL, a program that builds communication, creativity, and collaboration through improvisational theater workshops and performances.

The Mira Costa Drama/Tech Department is an award-winning program that regularly competes in prestigious events such as the Fullerton College High School Theatre Festival (Tech), JRay Awards (Spring Musical), and California Educational Theatre Association (CETA) Adjudication (Fall Play). The department has earned multiple honors from the Jerry Herman High School Theatre Awards of Los Angeles, the John Raitt Awards for Youth, the Fullerton College High School Theatre Festival, and the California Educational Theatre Association Festival, establishing Mira Costa as a recognized leader in theatre education.

In recognition of its excellence, Mira Costa was named one of only 12 national “Premier Communities for Theatre Education” by the Educational Theatre Association.
