Measure C Projects

The Manhattan Beach Unified School District is celebrating the successful conclusion of its Measure C and Measure EE local bond programs. On November 8, 2016, the voters of
Manhattan Beach approved these two bond measures, providing the District with $153M in facilities funding.
 
Measure C was the $114 million measure that was used primarily at MBUSD elementary schools to improve infrastructure (including completing air conditioning for all classrooms), replacing the Ladera campus at Grand View, and making improvements to each elementary site, based on the Facilities Master Plan developed by the District in 2015.
 
The District is grateful to the Manhattan Beach community for making these improvements possible and is recently updated its comprehensive 2024 Facilities Master Plan to identify
the next phase of needed improvements at local schools.
Since the approval of the bond measures, MBUSD has used this funding for the following projects:

  • Districtwide fencing to help to provide secure perimeters at all campuses. 
  • Revise, enlarge, and improve parking lots at Meadows Elementary, Pennekamp Elementary, and Grand View Elementary
  • Modernize classrooms at all five elementary schools, including 
    • The installation of air conditioning in all classrooms
    • The installation of new vinyl floor surfaces in all classrooms
    • New or repaired slide doors 
    • New interior paint 
    • New window coverings 
    • Updated data system cabling and equipment
    • Updated public address and clock systems where needed 
    • New ceilings where needed 
    • Upgrade to fire alarm system where needed 
    • Improvements to storefront and casework in all classrooms
    • Upgrades to campus infrastructures at all elementary schools
    • Provide ADA accessibility upgrades at all sites
    • Replace and repair roofs at buildings throughout the District
 
MB Preschool
  • Updated the infrastructure and provide classroom air conditioning 
  • Infrastructure upgrades 

Grand View Elementary 
New 16,900 square foot two-story classroom building containing 10 classrooms as well as a new three-story administration/Multipurpose/Food Services building, and associated work to ensure accessibility and adequate play and support spaces for the campus.
  • The removal of the outdated multi-story Ladera classroom building and Performing Arts Center at Grand View, along with three outdated modular classrooms on the northwest corner of the Grand View campus.
  • Specifically, this included the construction of two new playfields (the 8,800 square foot mid-level field, as well as the 30,700 square foot north campus field) as well as smaller grass spaces at the northwest and southeast corners of the campus, built a new playground, constructed a new fire lane connecting the entire campus, installed new landscaping throughout the campus, constructed a new parking lot, and built the new three-story building.
  • The new 19,590 square foot three-story building serves as the new entrance to the campus.
    • On the first floor, the building includes a welcome center, new administration offices, a health office, and a conference room, as well as various storage and support spaces.
    • The second floor is home to the new Performing Arts Complex, including a 3,900 square-foot multipurpose room designed to hold 602 occupants and incorporating a flexible open space with a performance platform, operable bleachers, and a lighting and sound system. In addition, there is a spacious storage area, a well-equipped classroom space, and a large outdoor plaza providing a gathering area to the east of the multipurpose room.
    • On the third floor, there is a staff lounge, staff workroom, and a kitchen which opens out to a 1,920 square foot covered lunch area
 
Pennekamp Elementary
New 23,700 square foot two-story classroom building.
  • The removal of outdated modular classroom buildings at their end of life on the northeast portion of the Pennekamp campus.
  • New two-story classroom building containing 12 classroom spaces (7 standard classrooms, and 5 specialized spaces for science, Makerspace, physical education, and special education support services).
 
MBMS
The construction of a new 5,184 square-foot music building at the MBMS campus.
  • The new building includes a 2,552 square foot Band room and a 1,450 square foot choral room, each with a 17’ 7” ceiling height designed to support the acoustical needs of the programs, two offices, three practice rooms, a storage room, and specialized music storage cabinets.
  • The building houses programs that had outgrown their existing facilities and free up those facilities to support other growing programs and needs at MBMS.

Mira Costa Costa High School 
The construction of the 71,200 square-foot new Athletic Complex at Mira Costa High School, replacing the old 65-year-old gym. The old gym included a large and small gym and a boys and girls locker room.
  • The new Athletic Complex includes a 3-court main gymnasium, complete with bleachers that can accommodate the entire student body.
  • A smaller 1-court Pavilion gym
  • Two weight rooms, a wrestling room, two dance/flex rooms, two large classroom spaces, locker rooms, team rooms, and coaches' offices.
  • Installed a solar panel array at the new Mira Costa Athletic Complex.
