MINIMUM AGE FOR ADMITTANCE TO KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE
In California, a child shall be admitted to a school district’s kindergarten program at the beginning of a school year, or later in the same year if the child will have his or her fifth birthday on or before September 1 (EC48000[a]). This applies to kindergarten programs only. In 2022-2023, a child is eligible for Transitional Kindergarten (TK) if the child will have his or her fifth birthday between September 2 and February 2. For first grade enrollment, California law requires a child to be six years old on or before September 1 (EC Section 48010). School is mandatory for six-year-old students; parents and guardians must enroll their children in school once they reach the age of six (EC Section 48200).
Please note the information in this document is subject to change and may be updated at any time to reflect new guidelines based on state and local legislation.
Beginning with the 2022-2023 school year through 2025-2026, there will be a gradual phasing in of Universal Transitional Kindergarten, which in 2025-2026 will allow children who turn four years old by September 1 of each year to attend TK in that year. For the 2022-2023 school year, students who turn five between September 2, 2022 through February 2, 2023 will be eligible to enroll in the MBUSD TK program.
