Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (Orange)

School sites will utilize the following guidelines:

  • Consider moving activities inside, but it is OK to have recess and PE outside. OK to be active outside, especially for short activities such as recess and PE.
  • For longer activities such as athletic practice, take more breaks and do less intense activities.
  • Students with asthma should follow their asthma action plans. And, of course, watch for symptoms and take action as needed.

Unhealthy (Red)

School sites utilize the following guidelines:

  • Keep doors and windows closed.
  • For all outdoor activities, take more breaks and do less intense activities.
  • It’s OK to have recess, lunch and PE outdoors, but consider moving longer or more intense activities indoors or rescheduling them to another day or time. If students have recess or PE outside, activity intensity should be reduced (e.g., students may walk but should not run) in order to avoid situations where students are breathing hard; vigorous activities should be limited to 15 minutes at most.
  • Athletic contests and practices should go forward. Practice indoors or reduce vigorous exercise to 30 minutes with increased rest breaks and substitutions; for scheduled sporting events, increase rest breaks and substitutions per CIF guidelines for extreme heat.

Very Unhealthy (Purple)

School sites will utilize the following guidelines:

  • Recess, lunch, and PE may not be outdoors. Move all activities indoors or reschedule them to another day.
  • Scheduled sporting events must be rescheduled or relocated.
  • Students with asthma should follow their asthma action plans. And, of course, watch for symptoms and take action as needed.

Hazardous (Brown)

The District will consult with the county to determine actions.

  • We will follow County guidelines and consider closing schools. If schools remain open:
    • Remain indoors and keep activity levels low. All recesses and lunch will be indoors.
    • All athletic practices and games cancelled.
    • Students with asthma should follow their asthma action plans. And, of course, watch for symptoms and take action as needed.
